When the students at the McFarland High School welding class need a project for their class, they look to the needs of the community and local businesses. That’s where McFarland Unified provided an excellent opportunity for the class. McFarland Unified, which trains teachers, is in the process of renovating a brand new education center in a former elementary school, but the building needed a sign.

Students at McFarland High School developed a custom sign that incorporates the education group’s logo and name with bold letters that will be highly visible for teachers who attend the center.

“Lebsock Welding of Fairview has a long standing and special relationship with sugar beet farmers in the area. Jay Lebsock, owner and employee of Lebsock welding has been a self-employed welder since 1993.

“I welded for other employers for eight years before that,” Lebsock said. Having been a welder since 1985, Lebsock has had time to perfect his work and become a crucial part to many sugar beet harvesters in the area.”

New PA Welding Lab Aims to Meet Job Demands
“Welders are in demand. The American Welding society estimates a shortage of 400,000 welders nationwide by 2024. ‘Between machinists and welders, they’re clamoring for people,’ said Executive Director of Bethlehem Area Vo-Tech Adam Lazarchak.

According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, Pennsylvania is one of the top five states for welder employment, which is why Bethlehem Vo-Tech just installed a new $1.3 million welding lab. ‘The old lab had 16 welding booths. The new one allows us 20 work stations with a maximum – we can increase it up to 23 work stations,’ said Lazarchak.”

Welding Program Graduate Competes in Welding Olympics
A recent CNM graduate is going for the gold and hoping to compete in what’s known as the Olympics of welding. It’s a competition that happens every two years and if he makes it, he would be the first welder from New Mexico to do it.

Andrew Mckinley, 19, says a high school welding class in Mountainair solidified his fascination. “I really enjoyed it so I wanted to make a career out of it,” McKinley said.

Senator Praises Welding Training
“U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Springfield, was at Hampshire High School on Tuesday to tour the school’s accredited welding program and learn about opportunities for students studying these skills.

One of the former students he spoke to was Zack Baumgartner, 18, who recently became one of two nationally accredited welders out of the school and now works for Omni Containment Systems in Elgin.”

Welding Shop Fire Caught Before It Spread
“Quick action by campus police helped stop a fire at Calhoun Community College from doing extensive damage. Around 12:37 a.m. Wednesday morning, an officer patrolling campus spotted some smoke coming from the welding shop adjacent to the Industrial Technologies building.

Firefighters said the source of the flames came from about a third of the way into the welding shop. It wasn’t immediately clear what initially caught fire.”
