Welding Student Prepares for Skills Competition
“Wallace State welding student Jacob Humphrey knows what it takes to be a state SkillsUSA champion. He’s now attempting to be among the top six students in the United States to qualify for the American Welding Society/SkillsUSA world competition.
Since enrolling at Wallace State during the summer semester, Humphrey, has devoted a myriad of hours each day to the competition, completing a variety of welds at different checkpoints.”
Welding Student Says It Clears His Mind
“Izack Marler is in his third year in the welding program at the Mayfield-Graves County Area Technological Center, and it means more to him than fusing two pieces of metal together.
‘It’s a fun thing to be doing,’ he said. ‘It kind of clears your mind from everything. I’m a hands-on kind of guy.’”
High School Student Wins Welding Award
“She came up with an idea: She’d meld her artistic talent with the welding skills she was trying to hone to make an octopus-shaped lamp. Her creation, “Octolampus,” recently won the bronze award in the sculpture category of the national James F. Lincoln Foundation Welding Awards Competition.
Beason’s creation was made during a six-week independent study class she took in the spring of her sophomore year. She wanted to build on the skills she learned in artistic metalsmithing and introduction to metals courses.”
Iowa Governor Tries Out Welding
“Reynolds was shown the ropes Tuesday by welder Russ Dunkin at Flint Cliffs Manufacturing in Burlington. The governor took a tour of the 110-year-old plant following her stop at the Comfort Inn and Suites for a Future Ready Iowa summit.
The workforce challenges faced at Flint Cliffs, a 147,000 square-foot metal fabrication facility, tie-in directly to Reynolds’ Future Ready Iowa initiative. Launched during the 2018 session of the Iowa Legislature, Future Ready Iowa aims to get 70 percent of the state’s workforce in higher education or technical training beyond high school by 2025.”

“The Minneapolis Fire Department said an explosion at a commercial building in Minneapolis Thursday occurred when a pipe welding torch ignited and aluminum dust and water mixture. Fire crews responded to an explosion at Metal-Matic at 629 Second Street Southeast around 2:45 p.m. Thursday.”
Welding Causes South Dakota Garage Fire
“The fire spread from the two-story garage, which contained about nine rental spaces, to two vehicles nearby. No one was was hurt in the fire, which fire officials determined was caused by welding work that ignited material in the garage.”
